Water Damage Restoration Steps and Renovation

Water damage can occur in any area, no matter what the location or elevation is. There could be many reasons for flooding, such as faults in plumbing, broken sewer lines, or natural calamity. No matter what the cause is, it is always essential to proceed with water damage restoration.

Water damage restoration not only repairs the destruction caused but also prevents a structure from undergoing further damage. Also, the restoration process is highly standardized and performed by professionals.

Understanding The Category Of Water Damage

The category of water damage depends upon the type of water that floods. According to the extent of contamination in water, it can be of the following categories.

Category 1

When the water comes from a clean source and is appropriate for drinking, it falls into the first category. In such cases, the water is not harmful if consumed or comes in contact with the skin. The origin of such water damage is typically from broken pipes, sprinklers, or overflowing water tanks.

Category 2

When the flooded water is contaminated up to some level and can cause sickness if consumed, the water damage falls under the second category. Such water contains hazardous chemical or biological matter such as urine, detergents, etc.

Category 3

In category 3 of water damage, the water is highly contaminated. It may contain harmful pathogens and toxic chemicals. The most common example is raw sewage. Such water is hazardous for human beings and could be deadly if consumed. Other sources under this category are alkaline water from the sea and water contaminated with heavy metals and pesticides.

Regardless of the category of water damage, it’s essential to carry out the remedial process. Following are the water damage restoration steps and renovation that you should initiate without wasting time.

Assessment Of The Damage

The initial inspection performed by a professional determines the category of water damage. After analyzing the extent of loss and the damage caused to the property, you move on to further steps and restore your ace effectively.

Extraction Of Water

After inspection, the next step is to remove all the flooded water and prevent further damage. Its execution takes place using pumps and vacuum. It is crucial to remove water as soon as possible to avoid the build-up of bacteria.

Dehumidification

Once the water removal process is complete, the next important step is to ensure that the place is completely dried. The pumps can remove the standing water. However, completely drying the site may take several weeks to complete.

Sanitizing

After dehumidification, the restoration process includes thorough cleaning and sanitization. This step involves using anti-bacterial agents to get rid of the odor and microbes. You have to ensure that all your belongings: the furniture, clothes, and carpets undergo proper sanitization as they can become a storehouse of bacteria.

Restoring

It is the last step and involves repairing and reconstructing the damaged parts to restore them to the previous conditions. It may include a little construction, replacement of materials, changing damaged fixtures, painting, etc.

It is always a smarter choice to start with the restoration process at the earliest. Delay may cause further damage, and things may become more challenging to fix later on.
